In Los Pazos de Ulloa (1886), this rejection is presented
through the character of the priest Julián Álvarez. Raised by a sanctimonious mother and made
an object of ridicule in the seminary for his fastidious cleanliness, Julián constitutes an exception
to traditional ideas about masculinity. This article proposes a reinterpretation of Julián’s character
based on his particular manifestation of gender in the naturalist setting of the novel. Religious and
secular men alike judge Julián for his delicate appearance and behavior, forcing him to engage
in stereotypically masculine activities such as drinking and hunting. However, he resents these
impositions, demonstrating a level of sensitivity condemned by society. This article explores Julián’s
resistance to hegemonic masculinity as a way for Pardo Bazán to rebel against the materialism
required in Naturalism. Using gender and masculinity studies as a theoretical framework, the article
explains how Julián challenges traditional perceptions of gender, exemplifying an alternative and positive masculinity. Thus, what was supposedly a deficiency becomes a possibility for salvation that
allows the priest to materialize another way of being a man. This approach to Los Pazos contributes
to the study of the intersection between gender and religion in nineteenth-century Spanish literature
In an 1898 article of La vida contemporánea for La Ilustración Artística, Emilia
Pardo Bazán advocates for the use of postal cards because they cost less, but are just as trustworthy
as letters. Yet only three years later, the author would offer a resounding criticism of this means of
interpersonal communication. Likewise, although later she would praise cinema on account of its
unexpected narrative capacity, in 1908 she pronounces a negative judgement on this innovative
mass medium. With a theoretical and methodological framework that we would define today as
cultural studies, Pardo Bazán presents her reservations regarding both media in similar terms. Her
epistemological approach questions the value of the immediate, visual, and instinctive qualities
they offer, valuing instead that which is procedural, textual, and pondered. This approach ultimately
reveals her opinion about the dichotomy between the irrational and the rational in literature and
the arts. Not only does Pardo Bazán point out the harmful influence of some aspects of foreign
modernity, but she also warns the readers about the unwanted individual and social transformations
that arise when the medium is identified with the message, or, in the author’s words about
postcards, “la estampita” with “el asunto.” For Pardo Bazán, postcards and cinema will only be
dignified media when they acquire a “pedagogical” and “patriotic” narrative, albeit to the detriment
of their visual nature.
Alicia Cerezo Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/360 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Presentación https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/361
.
La Tribuna Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/361 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 De La Tribuna a Cigarreiras https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/362 Cándido Pazó Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/362 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Cigarreiras https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/363 Cándido Pazó Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/363 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Cigarreras https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/364 Cándido Pazó Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/364 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Un camiño de teatro e pedras entre La Tribuna e Cigarreiras https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/365 Inma López Silva Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/365 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Cigarreras, una excelente adaptación teatral de La Tribuna, de Emilia Pardo bazán, en el Teatro Fernán Gómez https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/366 José Luis González Subías Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/366 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 La Tribuna, de Emilia Pardo Bazán, en el escenario https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/367 José Manuel González Herrán, Ana Romero Masiá, Santiago Díaz Lage, Marisa Sotelo Vázquez Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/367 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 As OBRAS DE PARDO BAZÁN TRADUCIDAS AO GALEGO: SORTE DESIGUAL, INTERESES DIVERSOS https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/368
.
Alejandro Tobar Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/368 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 MI TRADUCCIÓN DE UN VIAJE DE NOVIOS DE EMILIA PARDO BAZÁN AL TURCO https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/369
.
Nesrim Karavar Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/369 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Una carta y una postal inéditas de doña Emilia a Palacio Valdés https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/370 Francisco Trinidad Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/370 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Carta de la niña Emilia a su padre Don José Pardo Bazán (1861) https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/371 Luis Miguel Fernández Copyright (c) 2025 La Tribuna https://revistalatribuna.gal/index.php/Tribuna/article/view/371 Wed, 12 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000
