Abstract

This paper analyses the pragmatic devices employed in building the autodiegetic
narratorial voice in Emilia Pardo Bazán’s Pascual López. Autobiografía de un estudiante de
medicina (1879). This is the first of the pardobazanian narratives in which a fictional ‘I’ speaks
has a different identity from the author but seeks to be recognised as a subject belonging to the
referential world. In particular, the functioning of the paratextual devices of are studied.
