Emilia Pardo Bazán, Himnos y sueños, poetry, Núñez de Arce, romance.Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate the reasons why Emilia Pardo Bazán
decided to abandon her project to publish Himnos y sueños, a collection of poems to which
she devoted special attention between 1875 and 1878. Various reasons played a part in this,
ranging from Núñez de Arce, the rise of the great nineteenth-century novel, to the writer’s desire
to assert herself as a true professional. Beyond the historical casuistry, the history of Himnos y
sueños allows us to understand how the status and role of women of letters evolved, but also how
genres evolved, both in terms of their aesthetics and the way in which they contributed, from
representation and imagination, to ordering writers’ ways of being in the world.
